Release date: 20.01.2023

Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after H.M. Berbekov in the Rating of media activity of universities subordinate to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia. M-RATE is a monthly rating that takes into account the media activity of 229 universities in the country — classical, research, specialized, both federal and regional. KBSU is the only classical university among the universities of the North Caucasus Federal District, included in the TOP-50 of the consolidated rating for December.

The rise in the general index of media activity of KBSU became possible due to the rapid rise from 111th place to 44th in the Social Networks section and from 72nd to 66th in the Media section. Such a rise, of course, indicates an increase in the interest of the target audiences of KBSU in the educational, scientific and socio-cultural agenda of the university, reflected both in social networks and in the media. The full rating of media activity of universities can be found here.

About the ranking: M-RATE is the only official ranking of Russian universities. The final rating takes into account the effectiveness of universities in the media space in three main areas: the effectiveness of the university with the media (Index Mass Media), social networks (Index Social) and the official website (Index Site).

Moreover, each of the three indicators has its own specific weight in the final formula and is calculated separately. The university’s performance indicator with the media takes into account the number of publications about the university and its employees in regional, federal and online media, the audience of these sources, the number of stories on TV channels, as well as the number of exclusive news about the university or its projects posted on the resources of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. The indicator of the effectiveness of the university’s work with social networks takes into account the presence of accounts at the university and work in social networks. At the same time, social networks have different significance for the “social index”. In the trend of the social network Telegram, VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, Rutube.

The updated rating DOES NOT take into account Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube video hosting. The university’s website performance indicator takes into account factors such as the audience of the site, the time users spend on it, the number of visits to the site per month, and bounce rates. Well, the rating is headed by traditional media leaders: Russian University of Economics named after G.V. Plekhanov, Ural Federal University and MSTU named after N.E. Bauman. Considering that the possibility of including all 707 universities in Russia (not only 230 subordinated to the Ministry of Education and Science) is being considered, the competition in the media space will noticeably intensify, and some criteria for evaluating media activity will be revised, which the Ministry of Education and Science promised to announce in February.
