For the 210th anniversary of Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov’s birth (1814-1841), the Scientific and Educational Center of Russian Language and Culture of the Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov held the traditional cultural event «Hour of High Poetry».

About 100 schoolchildren from the KBR, as well as KBSU students, including first-year students of the «Russian Philology» (Russian language and literature) program, who came from Turkmenistan, sent their videos with recitations of the great poet’s works.

Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov was born on October 15, 1814. He lived as a poet, scientist and warrior, died in a duel at the age of 26, and went down in history as «the first after Pushkin».

His work had a serious influence on the minds of his contemporaries: a special type of realistic novel of the 19th century was formed in Russian prose. The poems «Demon», «Mtsyri», «Song of the Merchant Kalashnikov», many lyrical poems, the novel «A Hero of Our Time», the drama in verse «Masquerade» became true masterpieces of Russian art. Leo Tolstoy admitted that his famous epic «War and Peace» grew out of Lermontov’s poem «Borodino». But Mikhail Yuryevich was also talented as an artist, leaving behind a large number of drawings and 13 oil paintings. He was musically gifted — he played the piano, flute, violin; he was an outstanding chess player and mathematician.

I would like to quote the words of A.I. Goncharov: «Lermontov is a colossal figure, like the eldest son in his father, he poured out into Pushkin. He walked, so to speak, in his footsteps… Lermontov went further in time, entered a new period of development of thought, a new movement of European and Russian life and outstripped Pushkin in the depth of thought, courage and novelty of ideas and flight.» The Scientific and Educational Center of Russian Language and Culture of KBSU thanks the participants of the event for their careful attitude to the heritage of Russian literature, high level of performance skills, creative approach to the preparation of the material. All readers will be awarded certificates and diplomas.
