Welcome to our big student family! How the first meetings with first-year students took place at KBSU

At the Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov held traditional orientation meetings with first-year students. 9 institutes, the Medical Academy and 4 colleges opened their doors to yesterday’s schoolchildren.

The main goal of these meetings is not only to introduce students to teachers, but also to help them go through the most important stage of adaptation: moving from the school coordinate system to adult university life.

In all departments of KBSU, their heads, heads of departments and curators of academic groups paid special attention to several key aspects of student life.

The first thing the mentors focused on was the difference between school and university. The structure of the educational process was explained to the newcomers in detail: classes start at 9.00, study five days a week, mainly in three pairs, divided into “upper” and “lower” weeks, as well as a recess schedule (10 minutes between pairs and 40 minutes for a long break).

Particular attention was paid to the point-rating system. First-year students were told that the final grade consists of 100 points: 10 points are given for attendance, 5 points each for intermediate checkpoints, and up to 35 points can be received for active work during the semester. Teachers reminded that in some disciplines there are “admissions” — a minimum threshold of scores, without which a student simply will not be allowed to take an exam or test.

At KBSU, students begin to engage in scientific work from the first year. Yesterday’s schoolchildren were told about the path from their first coursework to serious diploma research, and the opportunity to participate in university, all-Russian and international scientific conferences and forums.

The student ID is the main document of a freshman. They were also advised to familiarize themselves with the “Internal Regulations”. Chronic absenteeism and violations of discipline are subject to reprimands, reprimands, and even expulsion.

Studying at KBSU is not only lectures and seminars. At the meetings, student activists from all departments told first-year students about opportunities outside the classroom.

The kids were shown how extracurricular life works: from working in student councils (student councils) to participating in various clubs, creative workshops and coworking spaces. The student activists first of all invited newcomers to join their ranks in order to make university life brighter together.

The university has a huge number of sports sections, where everyone will find something to their liking — from martial arts to team sports.

The curators told their wards that the university campus is closed and securely guarded, the areas are well-groomed and safe. The first-year students were explained where the library’s electronic resources are located, how to use the food courts on the territory, and where they can go during the big break.

Particular emphasis was placed on the role of curators and curatorial hours. One day a week (usually the fourth day) is set aside not for lectures, but for live communication: curators discuss the progress of the week with students, answer questions and help solve organizational problems.

“We take care of all organizational issues. All you need to do is study, enjoy life, make friends and realize your talents,” said Elena Mashukova, director of the Institute of Law, Economics and Finance, to the first-year students, urging them, in addition to studying, to be sure to participate in scientific and social life.
