Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after H.M. Berbekov held a regular meeting of the Career Lighthouse club, organized by the Career Development Department of the university within the framework of the project «System of interaction between employers, students and graduates» of the program of strategic academic leadership «Priority-2030» and the project «Open Lecture Hall» of the Russian Society of Knowledge.

Director of the Career Development Center of the Career Development Department of the KBSU, lecturer Christina Lopatina talked with the meeting participants about how to avoid the fear of public speaking and make communication with interlocutors more effective.

This topic is most relevant right now, at a time when university graduates are employed and interviewed,

— Christina Lopatina shares.

Listeners from among the students of KBSU learned what glossophobia is and why it occurs. The lecturer explained that the causes of fear of public speaking differ depending on personal characteristics. It can also be a psychological trauma from childhood; and bad experiences related to public speaking; and low self-esteem and self-doubt; and fear of public disapproval and censure; and stress, depression; and the consequences of traumatic brain injury or other diseases, etc.

Fear of speaking in public prevents a person from living a rich social, personal and professional life,

– Christina Lopatina says.

She prepared specific recommendations on how to overcome the fear of public speaking in three stages: before the start of the speech; during a public speech; after the performance.

Before a speech, the lecturer believes, it is useful to thoroughly study the topic, including alternative points of view, in order to be ready to answer questions from the audience; draw up a plan-outline of speech, prepare a presentation — this will help you always remember what to talk about next. It would be nice to practice in front of a mirror, paying attention to gestures, facial expressions; record your speech on a voice recorder to critically evaluate it. A few minutes before the performance, you can do some exercise, and then stretch, this will help increase blood pressure and relax.

During the speech, Kristina Lopatina advised, you need to build your speech in such a way that it is convenient to pronounce it. Speak in short, capacious theses, with short pauses. Breathing should be calm and deep, this will make the voice more confident. In order not to get lost, it is better to direct your gaze above the audience.

The director of the Career Development Center recommended that the audience work on their mistakes after the speech; if you don’t have enough skills to speak in public, then enroll in public speaking courses or a theater studio. But the most effective way to cope with the fear of public speaking is to speak in public as often as possible, says Christina Lopatina.

Also at the meeting, issues of career growth, platforms where students can interact with employers, and much more were discussed.
