A scientist from Spain gives a series of lectures at KBSU

From April 8 to April 10, 2024 at Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after named after Kh.M. Berbekov, Professor of the Slavic Department of the Department of Greek and Slavic Philology from the University of Granada (Kingdom of Spain), Doctor of Philological Sciences Rafael Guzman Tirado, lectures on the topic “Russian language and literature through the eyes of a linguist-translator.”

The visit of a scientist from Spain to KBSU was organized as part of the development program of the SHI KBSU “Priority 2030” on the initiative of the director of the SHI Muslim Tamazov and the head of the department of Russian language and general linguistics Svetlana Bashieva.

Introducing the professor, Svetlana Bashieva noted:

“You have a unique opportunity to attend lectures by the famous Russian scholar, professor and foreign member of the Russian Academy of Education Rafael Guzman Tirado. Rafael has close ties with KBSU, having defended his doctoral dissertation here in 2006. Several of his books were written in collaboration with KBSU professor Zinaida Gabunia.”
Muslim Tamazov urged young listeners to make the most of Rafael’s stay at the university.

Head of the UNESCO Department of KBSU Alim Bogatyrev noted that scientists like Rafael Tirado are global citizens uniting different countries and peoples.

Addressing the students, Rafael Guzman Tirado said:

“KBSU is like a second home for me. I defended my dissertation here and it’s nice to be back. Thank you for your hospitality. I was attracted to the Russian language at one time, and I received a grant to study at Moscow State University. Now I teach at the University of Granada, which is the center of Russian studies in Spain.”
During his visit to KBSU, Rafael Guzman Tirado will give lectures on the development of the Russian language in Spain, the place of Russian literature in the global educational context, strategies for translating modern Russian prose, and will also talk about the features of translating novels by Russian writers into Spanish.

As a professional translator from Russian to Spanish, Rafael Guzman Tirado conducted trainings for students who were trying to translate excerpts from Evgeniy Vodolazkin’s works into different languages. The beginners were given the task of translating the passage into Ingush, Balkar, German, Arabic, Ukrainian, Ossetian, Kabardian and English. Students discussed the difficulties of translation, and Rafael gave recommendations for overcoming them.

Rafael Guzman Tirado is a famous Russian scholar, graduate of the graduate school of the Russian Language Department of Moscow State University (1990), Doctor of Philology (dissertation defense in 2006 at KBSU), professor, foreign member of the Russian Academy of Education (RAO).

He is the leader of 15 projects on grammar, Caucasian studies and education, as well as the author and co-author of numerous books and articles on the Russian language and Russian literature.

Rafael Guzman Tirado is a translator of scientific articles by Yu. M. Lotman, A.V. Bondarko, works of art by A. Averchenko, M. Zoshchenko, E. Vodolazkin and others from Russian into Spanish.

Awards: Order of Friendship for services to strengthening peace and mutual understanding between peoples (awarded by the President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin in the Kremlin Palace on National Unity Day, November 4, 1917); Gold medal A.S. Pushkin for great services in spreading the Russian language (2006); Certificate of honor from Rossotrudnichestvo for the spread of the Russian language in Spain.

2009 University of Granada Teacher of the Year Award in the Humanities. Member of the public supervisory board of the International Public Foundation for Culture and Education.

By Decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated September 27, 2021 No. 549, he was granted citizenship of the Russian Federation.
