Renowned artist Alim Pasht-Khan held a master class on easel graphics at KBSU

Release date: 07.10.2025

A master class on easel graphics for students of the Institute of Architecture, Construction, and Design and the College of Design was held at the Herman Pashtov Creative Workshop at the Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov. The class was led by Alim Pasht-Khan, People’s Artist of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, graphic artist, and sculptor.

Participants learned that an ex-libris is a bookplate that identifies a book’s owner. It typically includes the owner’s first and last name, along with a drawing that succinctly and figuratively reflects their interests, profession, or the contents of their library.

Students explored the principles of ex-libris design, discussing ideas and symbols that can help express the owner’s individuality. Participants first familiarized themselves with the works of renowned bookplate artists such as R. Kopylov, E. Blumkin, M. Verkholantsev, N. Domashchenko, I. Dmitrienko, E. Guseva, S. Kazimov, and others. They then created sketches both by hand and using graphics programs, demonstrating their creativity and unique approach to the task.

After approving the design and choosing the technique—whether engraving, printing, or stamping—the students, under the guidance of a master, began creating their bookplates. This practical stage was the culmination of the workshop, where the participants were able to see their ideas in tangible form.

«It was an incredibly inspiring experience,» shared Galina Khashirokova, a student at the Institute of Architecture and Design. «I never thought about how much an exlibris can mean to a book. Now I understand that it’s not just a symbol, but a whole story.» Working with Alim Pasht-Khan opened new horizons for us in graphics and design.»

The event’s organizers, faculty from the Department of Architecture and Design at KBSU’s Institute of Architecture and Design, are confident that such master classes confirm the importance of practical training and interaction with professionals in their field, contribute to the development of students’ skills and knowledge, and inspire them to further their creativity.
