Today the whole world celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the Circassians. A funeral meeting dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the end of the Caucasian War was held in Nalchik’s Freedom Square. It was attended by the head of Kabardino-Balkaria Kazbek Kokov, deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Zaur Gekkiev, Chairman of the Parliament of the Kabardino-Balkaria Tatyana Egorova, representatives of the legislative and executive authorities of the republic, leaders of public and religious associations.

Traditionally, the funeral event was opened by the President of the International Circassian Association, Khauti Sokhrokov. In his address, he emphasized that our ancestors were subjected to severe trials, but retained their dignity, culture and traditions, continuing to live and develop both in their native land and in foreign lands. He also noted the importance of remembering not only the tragic events, but also the positive aspects of Russian-Adyghe relations, which began long before the Caucasian War.

At noon, a minute of silence was declared in memory of the victims, as in other regions where May 21 is celebrated as a mournful date.

Representatives of the Muslim Spiritual Administration performed the funeral ceremony.

The acting rector of KBSU, Yuri Altudov, and the vice-rector for educational work and social issues, Sultan Gekkiev, on behalf of the KBSU staff and on their own behalf, laid flowers at the “Tree of Life” monument, symbolizing a turning point in the history of the Adyghe people.
