Release date: 18.11.2024

Over 250 people took part in the 10th anniversary international event «Geographical Dictation» in KBSU. Among them were teachers and students, schoolchildren from different regions of the republic, as well as employees of the High-Mountain Geophysical Institute.

The organizer of the event at the KBSU was the Institute of Chemistry and Biology. In total, over 150 sites were opened in the republic.

Foreign students took an active part in the educational event of the Russian Geographical Society. Most of them were students from Turkmenistan, but there were also children from Sierra Leone, Burundi, Angola, Jordan, India and other countries.

As noted by Tatyana Romanova, senior lecturer of the Department of Biology, Geoecology and Molecular-Genetic Foundations of Living Systems at the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of KBSU, foreign students believe that thanks to the «Geographical Dictation» they learn more about the country in which they study.

Before the start of the event, in a video message from the ISS, Russian cosmonauts called on geography enthusiasts to protect the environment and wished everyone good luck and new discoveries.

Assistant to the rector of KBSU, doctor of Geographical Sciences Sergey Shagin emphasized that participation in the «Geographical Dictation» is not just an intellectual test, but an opportunity to learn something new.

Director of the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of KBSU, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Rima Bazheva noted that such events unite students and teachers, contribute to instilling an interest in science. In her opinion, the dictation should be approached as an exciting task, and not as an exam, and afterwards it is useful to discuss the questions and answers with other participants.

Which elevation serves as a climatic barrier in the Novgorod region? Which traveler’s family can be called geographic? What famous river did Mamin-Sibiryak and Bazhov write about? Where is the «combustible stone»? Within an hour, it was necessary to answer 40 similarly fascinating questions prepared by experts, partner companies of the Russian Geographical Society, as well as geography enthusiasts as part of the «Write Your Question for the Geographical Dictation» competition.

Some of the children answered why it is worth taking part in the largest campaign of the Russian Geographical Society.

I have been participating in the «Geographical Dictation» since school. For me, this is a tradition. I really like studying our planet, especially the geography of our country, its nature, and culture. I wish everyone to be inquisitive and curious, to be more interested in what surrounds us, to read a lot and constantly discover new horizons,

— shared a student from Stavropol, Kubati Shidov.

Alina Khamukova, a student of MKOU «Secondary School No. 1» in the village of Psygansu, came to the «Geographical Dictation» for the first time.

I am very interested in studying geography in general and our country in particular. This is one of my favorite subjects. Thanks to the fascinating lessons of my teacher Raya Temirkanova, we fell in love with this science and discovered an amazing world,

— the schoolgirl explained.

Albert Gavrish, a student of the College of Information Technology and Economics of KBSU, believes that participation in the dictation will help to learn more about how the world works and will give a lot of new interesting and useful information.

The results of the dictation will be announced after December 12. Each participant will be able to check their results on the website of the Russian Geographical Society using their individual digital number.

«Geographical Dictation» is an international educational campaign of the RGS — it has been held annually since 2015. Its goal is to increase interest in the geography of Russia among the population and to popularize geographical knowledge.
