On December 17, 2024, leading researcher of the International Laboratory of Linguistic Convergence of the Higher School of Economics, associate professor, academic director of the educational program «Fundamental and Computational Linguistics» Yuri Lander visited Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov.

He gave a lecture to students and teachers of the Social and Humanitarian Institute about his research on the Abkhaz-Adyghe languages, considered in the context of polysynthetism.

Welcoming the guest, vice-rector for Research Svetlana Khashirova noted the great contribution of the linguist to the study and preservation of the native language of one of the titular nations of our republic, and also expressed hope for further cooperation.

We really want to establish interaction in the field of research on the Abkhaz-Adyghe languages. Unfortunately, the younger generation’s interest in their native language is decreasing every year, and the loss of their language is practically the loss of an ethnic group. It is very important for us to preserve our national culture and native language. Therefore, we need to create new consortiums that will help us do this,

— said Svetlana Khashirova.

Yuri Lander spoke about the significant differences that distinguish the Abkhaz-Adyghe languages from the languages of the Central European standard.

The scientist paid special attention to the morphological potential of these languages, which allows for easy and flexible formation of word forms in the process of speech, emphasizing the uniqueness and richness of their grammatical structure.
