KBSU Remembers and Honors: 20 Years Since the Tragic Events in Nalchik

Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov honored the memory of the victims of the militant attack on Nalchik twenty years ago. Vice-rector for Youth Policy, Educational Work, and Social Issues Beslan Nazranov and head of the Prevention Coordination Center Iskhak Murachaev participated in the memorial service.

Members of the republic’s government and deputies of the KBR Parliament, public and religious figures, representatives of law enforcement agencies and volunteers, students, and schoolchildren gathered in Police Square to honor the memory of the police officers who died in the line of duty on October 13-14, 2005.

In his speech, Deputy Chairman of the Kabardino-Balkarian Government Zalim Kashirokov noted the professionalism, courage, and heroism of the security forces who defended the republic and the civilian population during the tragic events of October 2005.

Kabardino-Balkarian Minister of Internal Affairs Vyacheslav Kryuchkov addressed the families and friends of the fallen officers with deep gratitude for raising worthy sons whose names will forever remain in the nation’s memory.

Since 2008, October 13 has officially been designated as Remembrance Day for Law Enforcement Officers Killed in the Line of Duty.

Exactly 20 years ago, militants launched an attack on Nalchik, attacking law enforcement agencies, including the Kabardino-Balkarian Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) Directorate for the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic. Violent clashes continued until October 14, claiming the lives of 35 law enforcement officers and 15 civilians, and injuring over 200 others.
