On December 5, 2023, the results of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the annual global ranking of sustainable development of universities, were published. This year, 1,183 universities from 84 countries were included in the top “greenest” higher education institutions. Kabardino-Balkarian State University took 937th place in the global list, and 39th position among 48 Russian universities included in the ranking.
UI Green Metric World University Ranking is an annual ranking that measures universities’ commitment to improving environmental infrastructure, as well as their promotion of sustainable development in the field of environmental protection.
The founders of the UI Green Metric World University Ranking seek to attract the attention of the academic community to the need to pursue a policy of sustainable environmental development to solve some environmental problems. The main rating criteria include indicators of energy consumption and saving, rational use of water resources, waste storage and recycling, use of environmentally friendly vehicles, and the area of green space on campus is assessed. Much attention is paid to the indicators of educational and scientific activity in this area. KBSU is a leader among the universities of the North Caucasus Federal District (KBSU, SSAU, NCFU) included in the UI Green Metric World University Ranking.
This year, KBSU improved its result by 15 positions in the world table. This fact indicates the high importance attached to issues of ecology, environmental protection, the development of science and education in this area, both at the university itself and in the state. As you know, the North Caucasus Federal District strives to achieve its goals and consistently fulfills its obligations, being a party to a number of international agreements and conventions in the field of environmental protection and rational use of natural resources aimed at social, economic and environmental global sustainable development.
Achieving such indicators at Kabardino-Balkarian State University became possible thanks to the developed University Development Program until 2030 and the focused work of the entire team.
We realize that respect for the environment should become part of the everyday culture of our large community — students, teaching staff, and employees. The university recognizes its responsibility to the future generation for preserving the environment and is ready to support the sustainable development of the region and the country not only through scientific research and student initiatives, but also through personal example.
