KBSU has become a platform for a project of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation
Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov became one of the platforms for the implementation of the joint project of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Union of Artists of Russia “The Image of a Woman in the Work of Contemporary Artists of the North Caucasus.”
This project is a continuation of the large program of the Russian Academy of Arts “Traditions and Innovations in the Works of Contemporary Artists of the North Caucasus”, which began in 2022, which in 2023–2025. implements a number of scientific, educational, educational and exhibition events in the Caucasus in accordance with state assignments approved by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. This work is aimed at developing and supporting art in the North Caucasus Federal District. In particular, in 2022, a comprehensive program dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic has already been implemented.
On October 9, the opening of the project took place in the Creative Workshop of German Pashtov of KBSU, where representatives of the Russian Academy of Arts, KBSU, the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation, the Union of Artists of the KBR, teachers and students of KBSU and PSU were present.
Addressing the audience, Sergei Stupin, director of the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts, noted:
The Academy of Arts and its president Zurab Tsereteli pay great attention to the upbringing and education of young people. Tsereteli calls for doing as much as possible to develop art and bring it to the regions.
Sergey Stupin thanked the Chairman of the KBR Union of Artists, Zhanna Kanukova, for her responsible and creative approach to organizing events within the project.
On behalf of the leadership of KBSU, the guests were greeted by acting. First Vice-Rector — Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Vadim Lesev, who especially emphasized the need for further development of the relations established with the Russian Academy of Arts.
Art critic, Honored Artist of Russia, senior researcher at the Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Arts Tatyana Boytsova also spoke about how important it is to work with young people, since it is a contribution to the future; Academician, Doctor of Art History, Head. Department of Problems of Art Education of the Scientific Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Arts Tatyana Astrakhantseva; Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, teacher of the Russian State Academy of Artistic Pedagogical University named after. S.G. Stroganova Konstantin Petrov; People’s Artist of the Russian Federation and Kabardino-Balkaria, academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, professor, founder and head of the school of woodcuts German Pashtov; representative of the Gamma brand Atik Naqibullah; teacher of Pyatigorsk State University Elena Rubets; famous artists of Kabardino-Balkaria — People’s Artist of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic Ruslan Tsrimov, Ruslan Thazapliev, Eduard Mazloev.
The first event of the project was a master class on painting by People’s Artist of the Russian Federation Konstantin Petrov for students of the College of Design and the Institute of Construction, Architecture and Design of KBSU, as well as for students of Pyatigorsk State University.
Addressing the beginning artists, the master especially emphasized that they were lucky because they were being taught by true professionals in their field, among whom was the “professional elder” German Pashtov.
On the same day, KBSU hosted an open lecture by Doctor of Art History Tatyana Astrakhantseva, “Peculiarities of teaching folk and decorative and applied arts,” which was attended by students and teachers of KBSU and PSU, as well as anyone interested in the topic of decorative and applied arts.
And at the Institute of Urban Development (Platform Nalchik), honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts Tatyana Boytsova gave a lecture on the topic “Sociocultural aspect of the artistic life of Russian regions in the 1990s: tradition and new cultural paradigm.”
On October 10, the National Museum of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic opened an exhibition of works by artists of the North Caucasus Federal District, who became the winners of a competition announced at the beginning of the year on the topic “The image of women in the works of contemporary artists of the North Caucasus.” The winners were determined by a jury chaired by Z.K. Tsereteli. Let us note that in 2024 this exhibition of the winners will be presented in Moscow at the Tsereteli Gallery museum and exhibition complex.
At the same time, in the Pavilion of Contemporary Art of the Park of the 100th Anniversary of the KBR, the opening of a personal exhibition of Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the KBR Arsen Gushapsh, dedicated to his 60th anniversary, took place.
On October 11, at the Boiling Point of KBSU, the Second International Scientific and Practical Conference of the academic project “Traditions and Innovation in the Works of Contemporary Artists of the North Caucasus” began its work — “The Image of a Woman in the Works of Contemporary Artists of the Caucasus”, which was attended by art historians of the North Caucasus, researchers from other regions of Russia and abroad.
Before the start of the conference, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Russian Academy of Arts and the Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov. On the part of the Russian Academy of Arts, the agreement was signed by the vice-president of the Russian Academy of Arts, Tatyana Kochemasova, and on the part of the KBSU, by the acting rector of the KBSU, Murat Gukepshokov.
Murat Gukepshokov thanked the representatives of the Russian Academy of Arts for their selfless work and expressed hope that current students will continue to preserve the culture and art of their predecessors and enhance the cultural values of their republic.
Our university is not just a center of education, it is a center for the formation of future representatives of our culture. Our cooperation will be a very big deal for all of us,

Let us note that the purpose of the agreement between KBSU and the Russian Academy of Arts is to develop and strengthen ties in the field of education, research, creative, social and educational activities.
For the Russian Academy of Arts, the university has become a space where it is possible to broadcast spiritual values, the academic school, and how it should sound, taking into account all modern trends. Of course, the creative workshop of the Russian Academy of Arts under the leadership of German Pashtov plays a big role here. Of course, this is a small example across Russia of how our academy can work in the regions. Indeed, the success of our creative workshops and joint projects under various agreements shows that we need to move in this direction and develop these programs. All goals and objectives are very clear to us, and they are formulated by our outstanding artists, they are formed by the demands of young people, and we always want to respond to this relevance,

At the conference, artists and art historians from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nalchik, Pyatigorsk, Makhachkala, Vladikavkaz, Grozny, as well as foreign colleagues from Spain, France, Switzerland, Turkey, and Iran presented their research.
Following the conference, a collection of proceedings will be published in electronic and printed formats.
