How to live to be a hundred: practical advice from Professor Balakin’s open lectures at KBSU

Release date: 15.09.2025

A series of open lectures on healthy longevity is taking place at the Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov. They are led by Konstantin Balakin, chief researcher at the Federal Research Center for Problems of Chemical Physics and Medical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor at MIPT and Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (PFUR).

Professor Balakin’s lectures cover the entire spectrum of issues related to prolonging active life. The audience learned about the fundamental biological mechanisms of aging, as well as about advanced technologies and innovative approaches that already today allow us to slow down these processes and prevent the development of age-related diseases. Particular attention was paid to the development of modern drugs that can significantly improve the quality of life in adulthood.

We live in an era of unprecedented scientific discoveries,” notes Professor Balakin. – The task of scientists today is not only to understand the nature of aging, but also to offer real, effective tools to combat its negative consequences. Our goal is not just to extend the years of life, but also to fill them with health, activity and the opportunity to realize their potential throughout their entire life. I am glad to have the opportunity to share with colleagues and students of KBSU the results of our research, including the development of domestic drugs that are already showing encouraging results.

The scientist also drew attention to the current state of medicine, where a reactive approach often prevails: diseases are treated only when they have already clearly manifested themselves.

We want to modify this model and move to a preventive one, focused on maintaining health. This is not only medicine in the narrow sense, but also education, ecology, social and cultural factors. We need to form a culture of longevity — this will become the foundation of the healthcare of the future,

— the professor added.

The chief researcher of the Federal Research Center for Problems of Chemical Physics and Medical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences also presented the latest achievements in the field of creating domestic medicines to the audience, emphasizing the importance of developing our own scientific school and production.

The project is intended to become not only a source of knowledge, but also a platform for exchanging experience between leading scientists and young researchers. The organizers hope that such events will contribute to the introduction of advanced technologies into healthcare practice and raising the level of medical science in the region.
