On August 26, Abkhazia celebrated the Day of Recognition of Independence by Russia. The historic event took place in 2008, when, taking into account the free expression of the will of the Abkhaz people and guided by the provisions of the UN Charter, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree recognizing the sovereignty of the Republic.

Abkhazia won its freedom on September 30, 1993, following a bloody war with Georgia that lasted 413 days. Then, a small but brave nation, with the help of volunteers, managed to stop the aggressor and win in an unequal struggle.

One of the first residents of Apsny to congratulate the significant event was the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia.

Dmitry Medvedev noted that at that time, without establishing official relations and alliance, it was impossible to guarantee a peaceful future and security for Abkhazia.

First Vice-Rector of the Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh. M. Berbekov Murat Gukepshokov, in the distant 1992, at the call of his heart, voluntarily stood up to defend Abkhazia when it was treacherously attacked by Georgia. He participated in military operations and was awarded the medals «For Courage» and «For Victory».

Murat Khasanbievich considers the recognition of Abkhazia’s sovereignty an outstanding act of justice and wishes the fraternal people peace and prosperity.

«I congratulate my military friends and residents of the friendly republic on this important historical date. The recognition of Abkhazia’s independence by the Russian Federation is an outstanding act of justice. The support of a large and powerful country allowed us to lay the foundations for the accelerated socio-economic development of the republic and became a guarantor of its security,» Murat Gukepshokov emphasized.

More than 1,500 volunteers from Kabardino-Balkaria fought for the freedom of Abkhazia. It was a reconnaissance group from our republic, as part of the Abkhaz army, that stormed the government building occupied by Georgian troops on September 27, 1993, and raised the Victory Banner over Sukhum.

The statehood of Abkhazia was recognized by the Republic of Nauru, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Syria and other countries following Russia.
