An employee of KBSU became a co-author of a book about landslides

Assistant to the rector of the Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after H.M. Berbekov, doctor of geography Sergei Shagin became a co-author of the book «Landslide activity in the North Caucasus in the 21st century.»

The sphere of professional scientific interests of Sergey Ivanovich is the study of the dangers and risks of natural and man-made emergencies in the territories of the Southern and North Caucasian federal districts. The book is intended for scientists, students and specialists involved in the problems of assessing the risks and dangers of landslide processes, as well as politicians, administrators, insurance companies, ministries and departments, organizations operating in the North Caucasus. Chapter 4.5 «Landslide activity on the territory of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic» tells: actively landslide processes are manifested on the territory of settlements in the areas where linear objects of the republic are located. The most prone to landslide activity are 24 settlements in six municipalities of the republic.

These are the suburbs of Nalchik — Khasanya and Belaya Rechka. In the Cherek region — Aushiger, Bezengi, Upper Balkaria, Gerpegezh and Kashkhatau. In Elbrus — Tyrnyauz, Elbrus, Bylym, Bedyk, Upper Baksan, Kendelen, Lashkuta. In Zolsky — Khabas, Sarmakovo, Kamennomostskoye, Zalukodes, Etoko. In Baksansky — Upper and Lower Kurkuzhins, Zayukovo, Atazhukino, in Chegemsky — Bulungu.

As Sergei Shagin emphasized, in the last three years, the activity of landslide activity did not exceed the average annual values. “Recently, the activation of landslides most often occurs due to human activities: deforestation, uncontrolled grazing, road construction and mining,” — Sergey Ivanovich noted.

Co-authors of the book (doctor of geographical sciences, professor Viktor Razumov, doctor of geographical sciences, candidate of biological sciences, professor Andrey Likhovid, doctor of technical sciences, professor Dmitry Shapovalov, doctor of Geographical Sciences, assistant to the rector of KBSU Sergey Shagin, candidate of geographical sciences, associate professor Natalya Razumova, Engineer Institute of geotechnics and engineering surveys in construction Natalya Bogdanova) came to the conclusion that the most large-scale landslide movements identified that occurred in the study area, the socio-economic aspects of their consequences, allow us to speak of a high degree of danger of landslide activity in the territory of the republic.

The monograph describes in detail the dangerous zones and prerequisites for further soil dynamics. The book can be found in the libraries of KBSU and the High Mountain Geophysical Institute and on their electronic resources. 26 copies were sent to the central libraries of the Russian Federation.
