A KBSU student represented Russia at the World Parapowerlifting Championships in Cairo
Sultan Kugotov, a fourth-year student at the Institute of Pedagogy, Psychology, and Physical Education and Sports at Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov, took part in the World Parapowerlifting Championships, which took place in Cairo, Egypt.
The tournament was a significant event for the Russian team, which, after a long break, once again competed under the national flag and anthem.
Sultan Kugotov arrived at the world championships as a leading medal contender. He had previously won the 2015 World Amateur Championships, organized by the WRPF, an independent sports organization dedicated to the development of powerlifting. However, unfortunately, an injury prevented him from demonstrating his full potential and winning the top award in Egypt.
«I went to Cairo only to win.» The injury didn’t allow me to show even half of what I’m capable of. It’s a shame, because I prepared so hard. But I’m not giving up! Now I’ll work twice as hard – on recovery and on building strength. My main goal is to qualify for the Paralympic Games. I’ll do everything I can to make this dream come true,» the student said.
Sultan Kugotov is a member of the Russian Paralympic team and the current national champion in parapowerlifting in the 72 kg weight class.
Parapowerlifting is a strength sport for people with musculoskeletal disabilities, in which athletes compete to lift the maximum weight in the bench press. This discipline is represented at the Paralympic Games.
