A university-wide chess tournament, organized by the Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in honor of the university’s 93rd anniversary, was successfully held at KBSU.

The competition between 22 chess players, including doctors of science, professors, associate professors, and students of secondary vocational and higher education, including international students from Egypt and India, created a unique atmosphere of intellectual competition between different generations of the university family. Participants included Candidate Masters of Sport, first-category chess players, and seasoned chess enthusiasts such as Professors Gennady Shustov and Aues Beev.

The chief referee for the competition was Professor Boris Kunizhev, a renowned chess player in the republic and beyond, a republic-level referee, and Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. In his welcoming speech, he noted the importance of chess as an intellectual game that promotes logical thinking and concentration. Associate Professor Zaur Cherkesov assisted with the judging.

The competition followed a playoff system, which means the loser immediately ceases to compete for the tournament title. The strongest players were selected based on the results of the rounds. A round robin followed, in which all participants played each other.

Following a tense competition, the prize winners were:

Muslim Akhkubekov, a second-year student at the Institute of Pedagogical and Physical Education, majoring in Primary Education. He scored 7.5 points out of a possible 9.

Mukhamed Kertiev, a second-year student at the Institute of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, majoring in Chemistry.

Vladimir Khorguani, a second-year student at the Institute of Information Technologies and Electrotechnics.
Special recognition was given to international students Murugesan Janani (India, first-year medical student, General Medicine) and Elfar Islam Mustafa (Egypt, fourth-year student, Institute of Social and Physical Medicine), who demonstrated a deep understanding of the game and received special prizes from the university administration. Commemorative awards were also presented to Albert Boziev, Associate Professor at Saratov State University of Geology and Information Technology, and Economics, and Zaur Gogunokov, a lecturer at Kyiv Institute of Information Technology, Economics, and Electrochemistry.

Following the awards ceremony for the winners and runners-up, Boris Kunizhev thanked the participants for their uncompromising and meaningful play and invited everyone to the planned New Year’s chess tournament.

The tournament organizers and participants express their gratitude to the university administration for their attention and support.
